The 'First Names' in Real Estate: a business update

With steady economic growth, low interest rates and the sterling devaluation (following the Brexit referendum last June), the UK commercial market remains an attractive choice for both domestic and international investors.

At First Names Group we remain excited about the prospects for commercial real estate during 2017 and are seeing increased activity across a broad range of asset classes, with a particular focus on purpose built student accommodation (PBSA), the private rented sector, hotels and logistics. Recent deals undertaken for clients include:

  • The establishment of a number of joint venture vehicles to support the acquisition of a portfolio of PBSA assets totalling almost 9,000 beds across key European jurisdictions 
  • Assisting a UK-based developer and operator of motor service areas issue a significant portfolio backed bond issuance of £190M with a prominent insurer 
  • Assisting a client, a London-based operator and developer of PBSA, to secure a £350M senior facility from a syndicate of institutional investors against a 2,520-bed PBSA portfolio 
  • Establishing a Jersey property unit trust to acquire a key town centre retail asset for £100M
  • The establishment of two multi-jurisdictional structures, incorporating the Isle of Man, Luxembourg and Dutch SPVs for the purpose of acquiring commercial real estate throughout Germany and the Netherlands for a UK-based PE house
  • Assisting a client in significantly expanding their real estate portfolio via the acquisition of assets across the hotel, leisure and retail sectors with an aggregate value of £132.5M
  • The establishment of a Scottish property fund exempt scheme investing into commercial, residential and industrial real estate in Scotland for £20M
