First Names Group is looking for the best and brightest school leavers and new graduates. Talented, high-potential individuals with personality and drive, ready to get their 'game face' on and kick-start their career with us. To give you a good flavour of what life as a First Name is like, we've asked a handful of our bright young administrators to tell us about their role and life in general. So far we've heard from Jade McKain, Matthew Le Bourgeois and Chloe Torode. Now it's Toby's turn!
Name: Toby Smale
Job title: Administrator
Department: Private Client
When did you join First Names Group? I have been with First Names Group for five years and eight months (including time with Mercator Trust prior to their acquisition by the Group).
What made you choose First Names Group? New opportunities and venturing into the unknown! I had never worked in an office and didn’t know what I wanted to do for a career. Thankfully I made a great decision.
What makes First Names Group such a special place to work? The friendly, relaxed atmosphere and great people.
What is the best thing about your job? Other than working opposite a bakery and a pub? My colleagues. No matter how the day is going someone will be there to make me laugh.
What professional qualifications are you doing? None at present; I finished my STEP Diploma in October 2015 and will be looking to start the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI) qualification shortly.
Where do you see yourself in five years’ time? Not sure – I never really plan that far ahead! Hopefully I will have progressed within First Names Group.
What do you do to unwind? I do exercise to blow off steam. I either play football or go for a run.
What’s the First Names Group social scene like? A mixed bag of events is the best way to describe our social scene! I’m a member of the Sports & Social Committee in Guernsey and we try to mix the types of events that we put on. We have sport-related activities such as clay pigeon shooting and go-karting, as well as other social activities including Easter egg making and champagne tasting. There is usually something for everyone.
What did you want to be when you were 10? A pilot in the Royal Air Force.
How did you celebrate your A-level results? I can’t remember what I did to celebrate my A-level results but once I finished my last STEP exam I went to California with my girlfriend, which was brilliant.
What’s your favourite possession? Not really sure. I’m never too far away from my iPhone, iPad or Xbox but I like to think I could survive without those!
Favourite drink? Either a pint of lager or a decent whisky on the rocks.
Night on the town or on the sofa? Probably night on the sofa but if I can make up a good enough excuse to go to town then I’m happy to celebrate my cat’s birthday…!
