First Names in baking for Jersey Hospice Care

24 June 2015

Earlier this month, our Jersey office held its second Bake Off in support of Jersey Hospice Care, their 2015 lead charity. They raised almost £300 on the day, adding to a running total of £8000 for the year so far! This brings them even closer to their £14000 target, the cost of running the hospice for one day.

The competition had a total of 18 entrants offering an eclectic mix of sweet and savoury entries – from red velvet cupcakes to tuna slices; layered sponge cakes to quiche. The panel of judges included Jersey Hospice Care’s Kevin Caddell, Fundraising Manager, and Linzi Duckworth, Community Events Fundraiser, as well as special guest Bruno Bodnar of Bruno’s Bakery (a local favourite in Jersey!).

Runners up and winners were announced in Sweet and Savoury categories, with one person then being crowned the overall winner. In first place in the Sweet category was Senior Trust Officer, Lisa Wharton-Edwards, for her very pretty and delicious raspberry gateau. On top in the Savoury category – as well as winner the overall crown – was Simon Rodgers, Client Services Director, for his Rieslingspaschtéit.

Undefeated champion Simon, who won last year with a giant pork pie, had created a traditional Luxembourg dish consisting of chopped pork, veal and beef marinated in brandy, Riesling, shallots, garlic, carrots and herbs, baked in all-butter and Riesling pastry and filled with Riesling jelly. He learnt the recipe for Rieslingspaschtéit during his year living in Luxembourg.

When asked where his culinary prowess came from, Simon commented:

“My father was a clergyman and I was brought up in a rectory in Cambridgeshire with twelve acres of land. Half was rented out to the farmer next door and some to the villagers as allotments. The farmer paid his rent in meat, game and vegetables and the allotment owners in fruit and vegetables. I spent a lot of time during my formative years with my mother and household staff watching and helping them make all of our meals from scratch. It grew to be a passion from there.”
